flightgear - Flight Gear Flight Simulator
This thing is huge. This package comes to our attention from Paul, a student at Griffith University in Australia. Paul says that this very large OpenGL flight simulator requires eleven CDROMs worth of data to deliver all of the world scenery.

Check out the package dependencies: libc6, libgcc1, libglut3, libstdc++5, plib1c102, simgear0, libgl1, libglu1, xlibs, zlib1g, and fgfs-base. That's a lot of heavy duty stuff for someone like me who runs headless Debian servers for living.

The upstream source for this package can be found on SourceForge. Note that the package description doesn't really help with making the decision on whether you'll want to install this or not:
Flight Gear is a free and highly sophisticated flight simulator.

This package contains the runtime binaries.
But checkout the upstream source for pretty pictures. I'm going to try it out on Mac OS X myself.

More information on this package can be found on the Debian web site.

Cool. But instead of going buying a $3000 machine to play a flight simulator game on, I'd rather get flight lessons. :-7

What then ?

Sure, but what when you've _done_ the flight lessons and got the instructor, commercial and instrument certificates ... 8-)

Nah, a $300 machine works fine

Something is wrong GL-wise with the versions in testing and unstable, probably giving this impression.

Just to follow-up my own post, I've found (via irc.flightgear.org) that "fgfs --disable-specular-highlight" allows me ~10 FPS on this $300 1.1GHz box with an old ATI Rage 128 video card.

BTW! Look for "fgrun" at sourceforge. It will help in selecting airplanes and airports, amongst other things.

$ cat ~/.fgfsrc

--fg-root=/usr/share/games/FlightGear
--fg-scenery=/usr/share/games/FlightGear/Scenery
--airport-id=KSFO
--aircraft=c182-2dpanel
--control=mouse
--enable-random-objects
--disable-hud-3d
--enable-horizon-effect
--disable-specular-highlight
--heading=110
--vc=60
--disable-textures
--fog-fastest
--visibility-miles=200
--timeofday=dawn

eh... you can use flightgear rather well in a <$1000 machine

You should definitely use the latest unstable release, and there are a few bugs now fixed in CVS. But for that you need OpenAl.

This thing is big enough (several differential equations redone 120times a second - and that's before any graphics), that optimised builds really do help.

Anyway, thanks for the feature.

Flightgear does not require a fast machine

No flightgear does not require a super-fast machine. I am currently running a Athlon 850 with 256Meg RAM and still get over 15 frames per second. (but the controls are more reponsive than the frame rate otherwise suggests).

We might be better to wait until FG 0.9.7 (currently in CVS) before creating a Debian package. New features are many but include carrier operations with catapult and trap functionality. (A trap is the cable that allow a plane to land on the carrier.
