pdftk - A useful tool for manipulating PDF documents
If PDF is electronic paper, then pdftk is an electronic stapler-remover, hole-punch, binder, secret-decoder-ring, and X-Ray-glasses. Pdftk is a simple tool for doing everyday things with PDF documents. Keep one in the top drawer of your desktop and use it to:
  • Merge PDF documents
  • Split PDF pages into a new document
  • Decrypt input as necessary (password required)
  • Encrypt output as desired
  • Burst a PDF document into single pages
  • Report PDF on metrics, including metadata and bookmarks
  • Uncompress and re-compress page streams
  • Repair corrupted PDF (where possible)

If you work with PDFs much, or would like to, pdftk is a must have. pdftk is a swiss-army-knife for PDF files. You can "burst" a PDF into its constituent pages. You can concatenate page ranges from different PDFs. The list goes on and on.

More information on this package can be found on the Debian web site.

Just a follow up to note that the new version of pdftk is out, and it also lets you:

+ Fill PDF Forms with FDF Data and/or Flatten Forms
+ Apply a Background Watermark
+ Update PDF Metadata
+ Attach Files to PDF Pages or the PDF Document
+ Unpack PDF Attachments

Version 1.00 is currently an unstable Debian package, but hopefully it will soon enter Sarge. Or, You can build it pretty easily using gcc/gcj/libgcj 3.3 or later.

Cheers-
