mimms - MMS (mms://) streaming media download utility
MiMMS, formerly called "mmsclient", is a simple client to download streaming audio and/or video media from the internet using the MMS protocol (i.e. from mms:// type URLs, generally found in asx files). Downloaded streams can then be replayed offline at your leisure, using any compatible media player of your choice.

Joshua R. points out this amazingly cool utility that demonstrates the futility of lock-in and the power of real choice:
MiMMS is effectively 'wget' or 'curl' for mms:// streams. A simple, no-nonsense command line utility for grabbing multimedia content provided by microsoft's special streaming protocol. Handy if your ASX player of choice does not support mms:// directly, as well as if you just want to keep a copy of the content after it plays.

More information on this package can be found on the Debian web site.

Now I can listen to audible.com samples on my linux box. (Windows computer only used for downloading audible content so has very crappy speakers).

Mplayer can also save these streams with its -dumpstream option.

What Linux player, other than mplayer, can play those downloads?

It depends on the codec used, which is different than the streaming format. Xine and GStreamer can play many of the codecs, using only free libraries. I haven't had luck with WMV9 yet.

Xine can also use the same win32 libs as mplayer (and seems to have more nice GUI frontends), and I believe there's also a way to make gstreamer use xine as a last resort.

...or you can use "-ao pcm" to save it into a raw .wav and then encode to whatever mp3-ish or ogg-ish format you please.

Not really sure why, but mplayer and mencoder download about 1 minute of a show (from www.tv.lt) and stop at that point.

I am going to try to use mimms for that...
