ddrescue - copies data from one file or block device to another
dd_rescue is a tool to help you to save data from crashed partition. It tries to read and if it fails, it will go on with the next sectors where tools like dd will fail. If the copying process is interrupted by the user it is possible to continue at any position later. It can copy backwards.

Thorsten R. proudly brings us today's package:
If your harddisk starts getting seriously broken and you need to recover data from the damaged device, then you need ddrescue (dd will give up on broken hardware). Plug the hdd into a working system, fire up ddrescue and throw in some emergency prayers ...

More information on this package can be found on the Debian web site.
(If there is a package you would like to see featured here, go to the userinfo page and follow the directions there to submit your entry.)

Now available in RSS and ATOM flavors too.

AFAIK, dd has an option to continue if it finds any error, which IMO does exactly the same...How is ddrescue different?

There are (at least) two programs known as 'ddrescue':
http://www.garloff.de/kurt/linux/ddrescue/ and http://freshmeat.net/projects/dd_rescue/

There is in effect no practical difference between the first of them and 'dd', but the second one really tries hard to rescue your data and even saves a list of bad blocks for later use.
