slocate - A secure replacment of findutil's locate
This locate can index all files on your system, but only files and directories which the invoking user has access to will be displayed.

Note: If your computer is not up 24/7 you should consider installing anacron since the database is only updated once a night.

With the stock locate utility, a user can learn about the name and location of files they wouldn't normally be able to get in a directory listing due to file permission restrictions. slocate honors these restrictions in its output so that users cannot glean information about files they shouldn't see.

With the stock locate utility, a user can learn about the name and location of files that the user NOBODY can see. Is this a security hole?

I can't find the package in my Debian testing. Looking in the official package repo I see that slocate is only possible to grab from unstable or stable, not testing..

Release critical bugs it say.. Bugger.. Does this mean that the next stable version will miss slocate all together?

(And Debian is not in the spellcheck program of this site :-) )

How very odd. It was in testing when I put this item into the queue. And now the next version won't enter testing because it doesn't already exist. I'm sure it'll get straightened out shortly.
