zssh - interactive file transfers over ssh
zssh (Zmodem SSH) is a program for interactively transferring files to a remote machine while using the secure shell (ssh). It is intended to be a convenient alternative to scp, allowing to transfer files without having to open another session and re-authenticate oneself.

Files are transferred through the zmodem protocol, using the rz and sz commands.

Submitted anonymously.

Of course, one could also make discreet use of the ssh-agent and use scp without re-authenticating (at least not explicitly).

More information on this package can be found on the Debian web site.
(If there is a package you would like to see featured here, go to the userinfo page and follow the directions there to submit your entry.)

Now available in RSS and ATOM flavors too.

Midnight Commander (the Norton Commander clone) can browse and transfer files using "FISH" ("FIle transfer over SHell filesystem"). Just like zssh, FISH can comminicate via ssh (and also via rsh, if you prefer an insecure but possibly faster alternative). To use it just fire up mc and type:

cd /#sh:[user@]machine[:options]/[remote-dir]

For example:

cd /#sh:joe@noncompressed.ssh.edu/private

More examples and options in the mc(1) man page.

Also available are fsh and shfs.
  • fsh (http://packages.debian.org/fsh) is a drop in replacement for ssh, and re-uses the ssh channel, so that each time you ask for a file you don't have to pay the time cost of starting a ssh connection.

  • shfs is a filesystem over ssh. Get the Debian package shfs-utils (http://packages.debian.org/shfs-utils) for mounting, and module-assistant (http://packages.debian.org/module-assistant) to build the kernel module. Then you can just use ordinary filesystem commands like cp(1).

Session multiplexing is available in OpenSSH for some months (http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=openbsd-cvs&m=108713907710158&w=2) now (in stable release since 3.9). Several SSH sessions can be "tunneled" into one connection: no more need to reauthenticate to scp a file if you are already logged in and no need for another program. But it seems Debian's OpenSSH version doesn't support it yet (Sid's version is 3.8).
