kuvert - A wrapper that encrypts or signs outgoing mail
Whew. Sorry about outage. Mental issues, you know?
kuvert automatically signs and/or encrypts outgoing mail using the PGP/MIME standard (rfc3156), based on the availability of the recipient's key in your keyring. Other than similar wrappers, kuvert does not store the passphrases on disk but keeps them just in memory; if available, kuvert prefers to store the key passphrases with quintuple-agent. kuvert works as a wrapper around your MTA.

&rw (yeah, Robert Waldner, that's right) says:
kuvert is the perfect tool for us lazy paranoids out there. 'nuff said.

I seriously doubt there are that many paranoid people out there. But plenty of lazy people (don't forget to vote, Americans).

More information on this package can be found on whatiskuvert and the Debian web site.
(If there is a package you would like to see featured here, go to the userinfo page and follow the directions there to submit your entry.)

Now available in RSS and ATOM flavors too.

Update: Fix homepage URL (which isn't really much of a homepage anyway, seriously). sigh

quintuple-agent?

apt-cache show quintuple-agent
....
Hmm. Maybe I can finally use PGP/MIME with Kmail without installing a pre-release gpg-agent from source?

You misunderstood. I know quintuple-agent is in Debian. I hadn't heard of it until now though. I had thought the only way to get PGP/MIME working in KMail (at least through KDE 3.2) was to compile a pre-release gpg-agent, but now I'm wondering if quintuple-agent will do the job.

You don't need quintuple-agent for that, kuvert's enough: all you need to do is convince KMail to pass the mail to kuvert_mta_wrapper instead of /usr/lib/sendmail.

quintuple-agent just caches the passphrase even more securely than kuvert itself.

Because I have multiple accounts (with different mail servers) that require authenticated sending, I have Kmail sending through SMTP itself rather than using sendmail.

BTW, in Debian and pretty much every other Linux it's /usr/sbin/sendmail, not /usr/lib/sendmail. Maybe you run Solaris? :-)

But /usr/lib/sendmail is the traditional location, but deprecated in favor of what we have now (which makes more sense). And as you might expect, there is a symlink:

/usr/lib/sendmail -> ../sbin/sendmail

Update: Fix homepage URL (which isn't really much of a homepage anyway, seriously). sigh

there's not *that* much to say about kuvert except that it
exists and roughly how it works; the real info is in the
manual pages and i didn't see the point in duplicating that
on the web.

however, if people think more detailed info should go there
let me know; having kuvert mentioned in the weekly newsletter may get more people to try it.

It's convenient to have the docs on a web-page for all that people that don't want to install a software package just to read the docs. I expect that there are more people like me that like to know what they are installing before they install anything.

Greetings
